Max Nordile (saxophone/vocals), Alejandra Alcala (bass/vocals), and Sam Lefebvre (drums) formed Preening in Oakland, CA in the summer of 2016, performing live for the first time and recording the first of two self-released demo tapes in a now-defunct produce district warehouse near the estuary. Lefebvre had released the flexi-disc debut of Nordile’s previous group, Violence Creeps, with an issue of the fanzine Degenerate. The trio came together over affinities for each other and no wave, wrote songs collaboratively in-person, and played often with local peers such as Baus, the World, Twompsax, Inverts, Drama, Lacker, and Smiley at Oakland DIY spaces such as the Church, the Hole, Sgraffito, Huffin, the Dome, Speakeasy, Beauty Supply, the Tubes, Dildo Factory, Grannies, and Secret. Preening toured nationwide and along the West Coast several times, and released two or three tapes, three EPs and two full-lengths through labels Digital Regress, Fine Concepts, and Ever/Never. "Discography (2016-2020)," a tape release on Spanish label Discos Peroquébein, compiles almost all of this material in chronological order, plus a previously unreleased song. Alcala plays in Oakland groups Blues Lawyer and Naked Roommate. Nordile, now in Olympia, WA, plays in Debt Rag, Cat Sick, HITS, and Blind CC. Lefebvre’s recording project Non Plus Temps is preparing to release "Desire Choir."
